Pituitary apoplexy is a condition in which the pituitary tumor spontaneously hemorrhages (bleeds). The term "pituitary apoplexy" can also describe a less common condition when a pituitary tumor outgrows its blood supply (a stroke). Pituitary apoplexy is most frequently caused by bleeding into a pre-existing benign tumour of the pituitary gland or by death of an area of tissue in the pituitary gland as a result of the tumour. In many cases, the tumour is undiagnosed and the patient is only made aware of its presence when the symptoms of pituitary apoplexy develop. Autoimmune hypophysitis can lead to deficiencies in one or more pituitary hormones, causing central diabetes insipidus if the posterior pituitary gland is affected as well as central adrenal insufficiency and central hypothyroidism if the anterior pituitary gland is affected. The symptoms depend on what part of the pituitary is affected.
